Possible this in RPI2 and mpd

Post by Vctrsnts » August 26th, 2018, 9:35 pm

Good morning.

My question is to see if you can perform this function with mpd and how??

The function is to install mpd in RPI2 and make the music server.

Then from another pc connect through the clients, sonata, ario, gmpc, etc ... and through the network, listen the music that is in the RPI.

I say this, because I have been trying this functionality for 3 days  , looking like crazy for inet and all the manuals that I have found explain, theoretically, this functionality, but in none of the cases has it ever worked. The maximum has been through a web browser.

So, that's why I ask, if this functionality is possible and how it could be done or I'm breaking my head for something that mpd can not do.

Thanks and sorry for bothering.

MPD clients are remote controls. MPD servers are music players.

satellite setup
- one MPD server with metadata repository. Music files are shared via CIFS or NFS.
- multiple MPD servers without metadata. CIFS or NFS clients eg MPD storage plugins.
- each MPD client connects to its own localhost.

http streaming
- http output plugin. Control with MPD client. Connect and play music with eg VLC

multicast streaming
- pipe output plugin. Control with MPD Client. Connect and play music with eg VLC
- works best on wired connections
- viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3847&p=5666&hilit=rtp#p5666

snapcast
- https://github.com/badaix/snapcast
- MPD and snapcast server on same machine.
- Control with MPD client. Connect and play music with snapcast client.

Did not try pulseaudio over network.

Thanks for the help and the advice.

So, if I understood correctly, it would be best to do the configuration through httpd and, for example, VLC listen to the music.

It could be a possibilitat. Right?

Again, thanks for everything...

No. Streaming music is a bad idea. You better install the music player of your choice on the machine that has the sound card and the speakers.

MPD is not a networked music player. It is a network-controlled music player.

No. Best solution is to avoid streaming and play on local hardware - see Max comment. Use satellite setup.

MPD is not a full blown streaming server although it works quite well in a local network with a few clients.

@max> I use MPD (git master) for listening to internet radio (and sometimes multicasting) and it works quite reliable on a wired network. Kudos to all contributors.

Thank you so much for everything.

Ok, now I understand. mpd, it is not a good solution for what I want to do.

Thanks for clarifying the doubts.

Thanks, again
