Buffering for ssh mount over internet

Post by gww »

Hi there,

I've set up a Raspberry Pi with mpd, which works well. I'm now attempting to access the music from a remote computer, over the internet. I have the raspi mounted using ssh/sftp (actually using Expandrive on Mac) and am using mpd on the mac, pointed to the mount location.

This all seems to work fine, but I'm getting frequent skipping, especially at the start of tracks, especially for large files (~20M flac). I don't get this if I use VLC or similar to play the file directly.

I've played a little with the buffer settings (audio_buffer_size "10240" and buffer_before_play "80%") but there's warnings in the man page (http://linux.die.net/man/5/mpd.conf) and the forums (http://forum.musicpd.org/viewtopic.php? ... ffer#p5418) about "knowing what you're doing".

What should I know about buffering before tinkering? How can I fix the stuttering?

TIA,
gww
