Raspberry pi 3 b - problem DSD native

Post by sbeuz » June 2nd, 2017, 10:33 pm

Here we go...

I have Raspberry pi 3b with Raspbian (Debian Linux) and a Denon DA10 DAC.

When I use it with fedora 25 and last mpd version 0.20.8 I have no problem to read DSD files in native mode (DSD32..)

However under Raspbian on Raspberry pi 3 b with the mpd service I couldn't read DSD files in "native" mode but "dop" mode works.

So I installed the 0.20.8 version of mpd under Raspbian and I have the same problem...

It's as if the signal for DSD native wasn't send to the DAC !?

In my mpd.conf I just add :
dsd_usb "no" in Alsa output for native DSD...

Please help me if you've any ideas...

@sbeuz, based on my experience, your issue most probably has to do with an older mpd version that usually debian project provides.

If you have a look here:

http://git.musicpd.org/cgit/master/mpd.git/plain/NEWS

You will see fixes for DSD_U32 even in version 0.20.2. I am not sure if raspbian provides such a new version:

https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=mpd

As I see here, even the unstable branch is stuck at 0.19.x.

If I were in your shoes I would compile the latest mpd and I would check with that.

I compiled mpd-0.20.9 on Raspbian (jessie 8) with Boost and libasound2-dev libraries to enable alsa.

I can read DSD files with dop mode (S32_LE) but when I try to use the native DSD mode I don't have a DSD32 (I use cat command to see the DAC status).

Reading the file in native DSD is OK but I don't have any sound and S32_LE is used instead of DSD32 !?

Ok, I didn't see in the download section the Debian packages (outdated and unsupported by this project). Sorry...

However with piCorePlayer (last lms version) I have the same mistake... It's not possible to play native DSD but DoP is OK... With ubuntu nor fedora there is no mistake to play DSD native (DSD_U32_BE) with compiled 0.20.x "mpd" version. To remember I use the DA10 Denon DAC... Also on Raspbian the 0.20.x compiled version of mpd play only DoP... :( :( :(

Finally I decided to install the last version of Raspbian wiith NOOBS_2.4.4.

So I downloaded mpd-0.19.21 src and the DSD patch for it....

Then I applied patch and compiled program. After, in ALSA mpd.conf file I add dsd_native "yes" and dsd_native_type "2".

Now I can play the DSD native files (DSD_U32_BE).

Thanks to Tuxx' member for this good "advertisement"...

Happy end ;ˆD

I'm glad you now decided to quit using MPD, and instead use an unsupported fork. Because that means you'll never again ask for help here.

That was not sarcasm. I was serious. You kept ignoring me, and I cannot possibly help people like you, and there are many like you. I don't like spending time on explaining those people why they really need to provide more information, but most of the time, it's futile. So I'm happy that you chose to leave (mainline) MPD, and use something I'm not responsible for.

Thanks for your answer, so I'm confused.
Good continuation and best regards.
