Currently, I have to scroll down in order to invoke album cover search. Only when I scroll down, GMPC will attempt to fetch covers for the next row (four each). Is there a way to pre-fetch all the covers without having to scroll row by row?

No, this is an optimization. GMPC tries to be as lazy as possible, to stay fast, try not to use unneeded memory and avoid completely DOS'ing the webservices that provide the information.
