Re: Improve replay sound quality under Debian

Is there a specific reason for your changed buffer settings? Not really, I just wanted to check whether doubling the buffer size had any effect. Should I better restore the default values? What about giving MPD a higher priority? https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/if_it_ain%27t_broke,_don%27t_fix_it :D...

Re: Improve replay sound quality under Debian

Let me nitpick... 1. Your HD and DAC are running on the same USB bus... Not ideal. 2. USB 3.0 is irrelevant for audio. 3. The hiFace devices uses propriatery drivers. Not even USB Audio Class 2.0 4. Get a DAC with a USB input. Why convert USB to S/PDIF? 1. Right, therefore my question: would it be ...

Re: Improve replay sound quality under Debian

Oh, a Naim fan :D Fan is parhaps a bit too much but I very much like the boxes! I replaced a 25 years old system last year. I first bought the SN2 and later a second hand DAC and the speakers. I am actually very happy with MPD, just thought it would be nice to have a place where to collect good tip...

Re: Improve replay sound quality under Debian

There is NO silver bullet. Sorry Use decent speakers or headphones Use fanless computer and ssd Onboard sound noisy? Use decent external DAC Use lossless audio codec(s) RTFM bit-perfect playback http://www.musicpd.org/doc/user/advanced_usage.html#bit_perfect Use recent MPD and kernel As stated in m...

Improve replay sound quality under Debian

I am very satisfied with the sound quality of MPD. But this does not mean, it cannot be further improved. This thread is meant to specifically address MPD configuration options, OS settings and BIOS settings that have been found to improve the sound quality of MPD specifically in Debian systems. Rep...

Re: Flac decoding errors with 5400 rpm external HDD

Problem solved. As suggested by Max, some files on the 5400 rpi HDD were different from the originals. The funny thing is that 'rsync -av --delete "$source" "$target"' did not detect those differences. But 'cmp' and 'diff' did. This is a bit annoying since I rely on 'rsync' on a daily basis for main...

Re: Flac decoding errors with 5400 rpm external HDD

No, but is it possible that your HDD corrupts data? Thanks Max, what do you mean exactly by "the HDD corrupts data"? I have mirrored my 200GB music collection on the 5400 HDD with rsync. I have been doing this for years without any problems but I will cmp the data on the 5400 HDD with the original ...

[Solved] Flac decoding errors with 5400 rpm external HDD

I have test-replaced a 250GB Samsung SSD 840 Pro with a spare 1TB WD 5400 rpm HDD as a temporary solution before buying a larger SSD drive. This had a tremendous negative impact on the sound quality and I had to revert to the SSD drive. Both the SSD and the 5400 rpm HDD drive were connected to the s...

Re: A New MPD like System

Wanted to let people know, that we have created a new audio system that took a lot of hints from the good developers of MPD. Its not mpd nor does it have any of its code. But we looked at what we felt could be improved upon and could be borrowed from such a groundbreaking system as yours. Its still...

Re: Customizable tags

This belongs on the bugtracker and while i would love this feature, i fear i know the answer :) Thanks for your reply Rasi. I am not sure this is a bug. I have opened a feature request on https://github.com/cmende/libmpdclient/issues/1 but no comments so far. I have looked at the sources a bit more...

Re: Album booklet in GMPC (or other MPD client) ?

On a Unix system running GMPC, this seems to work quite nicely: #!/bin/sh server="fitpc3" viewer="xpdf -fullscreen" tmpfile="/home/nicola/tmp/booklet.pdf" if wget -q "http://$server/music/$(dirname "$(mpc -h $server current --format '%file%')")/booklet.pdf" -O $tmpfile; then $viewer $tmpfile; rm $tm...

Re: Album booklet in GMPC (or other MPD client) ?

no... if you save them with a strict naming scheme (e.g. artist-album.pdf) you can easily create script that will open the file in pdf viewer... example: #!/bin/bash pdfpath=/path/to/your/pdffiles viewer=evince $viewer "$pdfpath"/"$(mpc current --format '%artist%-%album%')".pdf make it executable a...

Customizable tags

I have been using MPD for about two years on a minimal Debian system serving a USB -> SPDIF converter and into a Naim DAC based system. The server runs very reliably and I am very happy with this system. I think MPD fits my needs better than the proprietary software offered by Naim and other manufac...

Re: General question about tags in MPD

I have meanwhile been running MPD on a dedicated music server for about two years and with different clients and the system is very stable and reliable, thanks to all developers and contributors ! There is one major reason why I am looking for alternatives to MPD: MPD does not appear to support arbi...

Album booklet in GMPC (or other MPD client) ?

Many companies (e.g. eclassical.com, highresaudio.com) offer downloads of digital booklets, usually as .PDF files. Is there a GMPC plugin which allows one to access booklets (in much the same way as cover, lyrics, etc. can be accessed) and open them with a user selectable PDF viewer ? Thanks, nbpf.
