Feature request: support values of audio_buffer_size > 65536

If audio_buffer_size is set to values greater than 65536, MPD fails to start but no errors are logged to /var/log/mpd/mpd.log. 65536 is too small to allow MPD to replay from memory. Request: support values of audio_buffer_size much greater than 65536. Add the max. value of audio_buffer_size , say 2G...

Re: Transcoding to WAV

Many observers have reported small but not negligible improvement in sound quality when storing .wav files in place of their correspondent .flac files. Oh, we're talking about this kind of esoteric bullshit. No, thanks, I'm out of this thread. Max, I do not see what is esoteric in comparing the eff...

Re: Nice MPD?

I believe it's a bad suggestion. You need a good reason to force a multi-thread process like MPD to use only one CPU core total, and the web site doesn't explain any good reason. But, oh, that guy is talking about jitter. In digital audio processing. Oh, you fell to audiophile voodoo again! I haven...

I believe it's a bad suggestion. You need a good reason to force a multi-thread process like MPD to use only one CPU core total, and the web site doesn't explain any good reason. Thanks Max! The alleged reason is a perceived improvement in sound quality. Whether this is plausible or not, I do not k...

Use "\\" as seperator. Works very well here with Mp3tag as tagging-device. But i use it only for artist and album-artist. I don't know, if it works with genres.

It has been suggested in https://sites.google.com/site/computera ... ng-up-alsa. I thought I would give it a try. Thanks, nbpf

Re: Transcoding to WAV

No. The "alsa" output plugin doesn't use encoders. Why would it? That doesn't make any sense. Why doesn't it make any sense for the "alsa" output plugin to use encoders? Sorry for the possibly trivial question. I have no whatsoever idea what an "alsa" output plugin is (and in which sense it differs...

Re: Transcoding to WAV

Yes, with the "wave" encoder plugin. Is this done by adding encoder "wave" to the audio_outpu t section? Would audio_output { type "alsa" name "M2Tech hiFace Evo USB-SPDIF Interface" device "hw:2,0" auto_resample "no" auto_format "no" mixer_type "none" replay_gain_handler "none" use_mmap "yes" enco...

Re: Nice MPD?

Priorities are relative to other processes, and if there's no other process, the nice value has no effect. Well, of course there are a number of system processes running in the background ... A somehow similar question is whether it would make sense to run MPD on a specific core to avoid thread swa...

Re: Multiple values for specific tags

Why do you believe it does not accept multiple GENRE tags? Because when I filter by GENRE in ncmpcpp, GMPC or cantata I get selectable values like: classical - baroque - cello classical - baroque - chamber classical - baroque - chamber - gamba classical - baroque - chamber - sonata ... This suggest...

Re: Replay from memory

That may work, but it means that MPD will not start playback until it has read & decoded everything. Which may take longer that you're willing to wait when you press "play". I do not mind waiting but the upper limit for audio_buffer_size seems to be 65536. With higher values MPD fails to start but ...

Nice MPD?

Does it make sense, on a dedicated music server running MPD as a main process, to start MPD with a negative nice value? If so, what is a meaningful range of values? Thanks, nbpf

Replay from memory

The default values for audio_buffer_size and buffer_before_play are 4096 and 10% . Is it possible to set MPD to replay from memory by increasing the buffer size to, say 1GB and the value of buffer_before_play to 100% ? Is this meaningful on a dedicated music server? How do optimal values of audio_bu...

Multiple values for specific tags

MPD accepts multiple values for certain tags (ARTIST, for instance) but not for others. GENRE, in particular, seems not to support multiple values. Is it possible to setup MPD (clients) to accept multiple values for a specific tag? Thanks, nbpf

Re: Customizable tags

In another attempt at getting some feedback on tag customization from MPD developers, I have posted a feature request (4441) on the libmpdclient bug tracker: MPD does not support user-specific tags. Customizable tags are mandatory to meet specific musical interests (classical music, for instance) or...

Re: Improve replay sound quality under Debian

Let me nitpick... 1. Your HD and DAC are running on the same USB bus... Not ideal. 2. USB 3.0 is irrelevant for audio. 3. The hiFace devices uses propriatery drivers. Not even USB Audio Class 2.0 4. Get a DAC with a USB input. Why convert USB to S/PDIF? Regarding point 1: I have now made a direct c...
